Diocese of Alabama Holds First In-Person EfM Mentor Training Since COVID
The Diocese of Alabama has held its first in-person, on-site Education for Ministry (EfM) mentor training since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
From August 22–23, 2025, 23 participants representing 19 parishes gathered at Saint Stephen’s Church in Birmingham for two days of workshops, conversation, and learning. The event prepared attendees to serve as EfM mentors while also introducing them to the updated EfM curriculum launched this fall. Members of parish’s EfM class assisted in hosting the gathering.
The training was led by the Rev. Dr. José Fernández, Ms. Sissie Wile, former Interim Director of EfM; and the Rev. Kevin Goodman, the program’s current Executive Director. Together they shared insights and practical guidance drawn from years of experience in EfM leadership.

For many participants, the chance to return to in-person formation was invaluable.
“Our mentors said they were tired of Zoom training and wanted a face-to-face, on-site experience,” said Frank Holmes, Diocesan EfM Coordinator. “The closest option had been Virginia, which would have cost mentors around $1,500 each. By partnering with Sewanee to adjust the format and with Saint Stephen’s for space at no charge, we were able to host the training locally at a fraction of the cost.”
Participants echoed the difference. One noted, “In-person training is ideal.” Another reflected, “The learning atmosphere is so much better—community is stronger, and connections are more meaningful.” A third added, “I have no idea how I could have gained all the knowledge and helpful ideas if this had been virtual.”
Holmes said the gathering not only equipped new mentors but also strengthened relationships across the diocese. “This was a great opportunity for mentors from across the Diocese of Alabama to meet one another and build community. We hope to provide more opportunities like this in the future.”
