The Reverend Katie Pearson Named Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Alabama
The Right Reverend Richard Lawson, Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama, has named the Reverend Katie Pearson as Canon to the Ordinary. She began her appointment on July 6.
Pearson recently concluded her ministry as Vicar of Saint John’s Cathedral in Denver, Colorado, where she led the congregation through a season of growth and ministry while also serving in numerous leadership roles within the wider Church and higher education.
“I am thrilled to share that the Reverend Canon Katie Pearson has agreed to become our Canon to the Ordinary,” Lawson said in a statement to the diocesan community. “Katie preaches the Gospel with depth and heartfelt storytelling, plus she has profound gifts for administration and pastoral care. I am also happy to assure you that she has a sense of humor, which, as most of us know, is essential in ministry and life.”
As Canon to the Ordinary, Pearson will serve as Bishop Lawson’s chief of staff and oversee clergy search processes throughout the Diocese of Alabama. She will work closely with clergy, congregations, diocesan staff, and diocesan leadership to support the mission and ministry of the diocese.
A graduate of the University of the South at Sewanee, Pearson has maintained a longstanding commitment to the institution and its governance. She currently serves on the Board of Regents and co-chaired the university’s search committee for its 18th Vice-Chancellor.
Responding to her appointment, Pearson said, “I am delighted to continue a nine-year working relationship with Richard and support him as he establishes his episcopacy. I look forward to getting to know the people and places of Alabama, to pray with you, and do kingdom-building ministry together.”
Pearson is married to Don, and they have three adult children.
